Laureato in fisica, inizialmente tecnico degli effetti speciali nell'equipe di Roger Corman, debutta con il film minore Piraňa paura del 1981. Nel 1984 dà vita a Terminator, il thriller fantascientifico (percorso da inquietudine apocalittica e tecnologia frastornante) che ottiene un incredibile successo di pubblico e lancia ad Hollywood Arnold Schwarzenegger, che allora era un attore semi-sconosciuto. Nel 1991 arriva l'inevitabile sequel, Terminator 2: Il giorno del giudizio.
La sua filmografia continua con Aliens - Scontro finale (1986), secondo capitolo del filone misto fantascienza-horror inaugurato da Ridley Scott, poi con The Abyss (1989), vicenda sottomarina dell'incontro di extra-terrestri subaquei, che nonostante sia, secondo alcuni, il più visionario ed originale dei film di Cameron, ottiene scarso successo perché non va incontro alle aspettative del pubblico, che si aspettava una specie di "Aliens" sottomarino. Nel 1994 è la volta di True Lies, ironica storia d'amore e di spionaggio alla James Bond. Si tratta del terzo film dell'accoppiata Cameron-Schwarzenegger, e il primo ad essere costituito da effetti speciali "invisibili", nonché il primo ad aver superato i 100 milioni $ di budget.


[modifica] Il colossale Titanic
Dopo aver prodotto e sceneggiato Strange days (1997), diretto da Kathryn Bigelow (allora sua moglie), nel 1997 dà alla luce il suo progetto più ambizioso, il kolossal storico-drammatico Titanic, il film più costoso mai realizzato fino ad allora (200 milioni $ di budget più altri 85 spesi per la promozione), che con 1,8 miliardi $ di incassi diventa il film di maggior successo nella storia del cinema. Ha ricevuto 14 Nominations all'Oscar, al pari di Eva contro Eva (1950), e ne ha vinti undici, primato detenuto insieme a Ben-Hur (1959) e Il Signore degli Anelli - Il Ritorno del Re (2002). Titanic è una melodrammatica storia d'amore sullo sfondo del tragico affondamento, che dispiega un'immaginazione e una ricchezza d'inventiva visiva e narrativa fuori degli schemi, al punto da porsi tra i film tecnicamente più riusciti ed affascinanti d'ogni tempo.
Dopo Titanic Cameron si dedica soprattutto a due documentari: Ghosts of the Abyss (2003), che parla del tragico affondamento della Wilhelm Gustloff, e Aliens of the deep (2005).


[modifica] I progetti futuri
Attualmente si sta dedicando alla pre-produzione di Avatar (Project 880), ennesimo kolossal che introdurrà nel mondo del cinema tecnologie visive d'assoluta avanguardia. Tra l'altro sarà il primo film girato in 3D Fusion Camera, un tipo di cinepresa digitale ad alta definizione 3D alla quale lui stesso, insieme a Vince Pace e Rob Legato, ha dedicato 6 anni di sviluppo. Infatti da quando ha avuto modo di sperimentare il 3D ad alta definizione per i documentari, Cameron ha affermato che non avrebbe mai più girato film con la pellicola cinematografica tradizionale.
Tematicamente i film di James Cameron sono dedicati all'esplorazione del rapporto tra l'uomo e la tecnologia, e paradossalmente tutta la tecnologia usata per crearli ha il compito di mostrare il lato pericoloso della tecnologia stessa: dalla guerra uomo-macchina della saga di Terminator, agli alieni di Aliens, alla tragedia del "più grande oggetto in movimento mai costruito nella storia dell'uomo", il Titanic.
