Charles Albert Browning nacque a Louisville (Kentucky - USA) il 12 luglio del 1882. Nel 1898 Browning, appena sedicenne, si innamor? di una ballerina che faceva parte di un gruppo artistico itinerante; decise cos? di lasciare la sua citt? natale e di unirsi a loro. Fu un'esperienza che gli permise di crearsi un certo back-ground, infatti gli permise di ricoprire diversi ruoli, dal clown all'acrobata, dal "dead man walking" (inteso come cadavere vivente, anche se in realt? questa espressione negli Stati Uniti di solito si usa per i condannati a morte - Ndr) al contorsionista.
Per Browning il circo costitu? il perno centrale della sua formazione e la versatilit? che ne ottenne la mise a frutto nel suo lavoro come attore, infatti nel 1912 approd? ad Hollywood insieme a David Griffith. Sfortunatamente nel giugno del 1915 rimase vittima, insieme ad Elmer Booth (anche lui attore), di un incidente automobilistico che quasi gli cost? la vita, si suppone che fosse alla guida in stato di ebrezza; comunque una volta riabilitato ritorn? al lavoro insieme ad Erich Von Stroheim (l'altro assistente di Griffith), e ci? gli permise di continuare ad affinare le sue competenze tecniche (infatti prima dell'incidente aveva debuttato come regista realizzando il cortometraggio muto"The Lucky Transfer") e le sue qualit? di sceneggiatore. Diciamo quindi che la sua preparazione da tutti i punti di vista fece della filmografia di Browning un insieme compatto e reale. Si dice che una storia debba essere plausibile, per non cadere nel ridicolo; Browning cre? dei personaggi cos? eccessivi e dei paesaggi, dalla bella famigliola felice all'evento pi? tragico, che erano talmente bizzarri e stravaganti da sembrare pi? verosimili della realt? che stava al di fuori del grande schermo.
Nel 1917 gir? il suo primo lungometraggio "Jim Bludso", che segn? l'inizio della sua specializzazione nella filmografia di genere romantico/avventuroso, e nel 1920 ebbe luogo la sua conoscenza con Lon Chaney (al secolo Alonzo Chaney) inimitabile attore del cinema muto famoso sopratutto per le sue trasformazioni. A Chaney bastavano pochi tocchi di trucco e dolorose contorsioni per dare vita a personaggi mostruosi, ma dotati di un'espressivit? senza pari. Questo gli consent? non solo di incarnare quelle che erano gli eccessi e le stranezze di Browning, ma addirittura di essere la musa ispiratrice di sceneggiature che Browning realizz? proprio per lui. Il loro rapporto si consolid? realizzando sceneggiature orientate sul genere horror, immagini angoscianti di volti sfigurati e corpi smembrati come metafora della distruzione della personalit?. Questo fa presupporre che dietro ci potesse essere l'utilizzo della psicoanalisi data anche la conoscenza, da parte di Browning, del saggio riferito all'esposizione psicoanalitica del vampirismo di Ernest Jones "On the Nightmare", di indiscutibile origine freudiana, che fu pubblicato lo stesso anno dell'uscita del film Dracula. Comunque Browning, prima ancora di Dracula, gir? uno dei primi film sui vampiri del cinema muto americano, era il 1927 e il titolo era London After Midnight. Chaney sfrutt? i suoi trucchi dando volto ad un vampiro dalla fisionomia distorta.
Tod Browning mor? a Malib? il 6 ottobre del 1962.

sono curiosissima di vedere "freaks", appena riesco torno con una recensioone o quasi..
he colpa ch'ha la gatta se la moglie ? guasta!

indubbiamente il suo film pi? significativo, e impressionante

io non lo vedo da molto, e vorrei rivederlo ma non ce l'ho.

Browning ha girato molti film, e per forza di cose non sono tutti buoni, ma se li guardate con un occhio all'anno delle riprese... Anche solo dai titoli, si pu? intuire la sua, a tratti incredibile, modernit?. :D

l'ho rivisto stasera, confermo, un ottimo film, decisamente orginale non solo per i tempi, ha stimolato una discussione accesa sul ruolo delle persone con particolari handycap fisici nel cinema moderno (a parte nani e down, o i cipr? e maresco, direi che gli storpi veri a livello di freak sian tab?...) e quanto sia cambiata la loro condizione, dai tempi in cui venivano esibiti come attrazione nei circhi.

Il film regge su una storia ben congegnata, una regia molto "professionale" che regala qualche inquadratura d'alta scuola (il nano con il coltello, verso il finale, che si avvicina da dietro la ruota del carro, ? da brividi, cos? come perfetto ? il taglio del "tronco umano" quando si accende la sigaretta, che indugia, con il movimento di camera, a met? tra il "disagio" e "l'indifferenza", che ? poi il nodo centrale da risolvere nel modo di porsi verso "il diverso")

cercher? di approfondire sul regista... se non ricordo male l'anno di freaks coincide con l'anno d'oro di un altro regista, H. Hawks, mi pare sia infatti l'anno di scarface, che il cinema americano, negli anni 30, avesse trovato la sua vera dimensione?
